Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS Sets New Benchmark in India with Local Production and Exclusive Editions

Mercedes-Benz India has just ushered in a new era for ultra-luxury SUVs with a series of landmark developments around the Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS a vehicle that has long symbolised the pinnacle of automotive opulence. In a significant move for both the brand and the luxury car market in India, Mercedes-Benz has begun local production of the Maybach GLS at its Pune facility, making India the first country outside the United States to manufacture this flagship SUV.

This bold decision reflects India’s growing strategic importance in Mercedes-Benz’s global operations, fuelled by surging demand for high-end vehicles and an expanding base of affluent buyers seeking bespoke automotive experiences.

Made-in-India Maybach GLS A Milestone in Luxury SUV Manufacturing

Until recently, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS was offered in India solely through completely built unit (CBU) imports from the United States. Now, with local assembly underway, the SUV will be more accessible and competitively priced. The shift to local production not only deepens Mercedes-Benz’s manufacturing footprint in the country but also helps shorten delivery times — a key advantage for buyers in the ultra-luxury segment where long waiting periods are common.

In terms of pricing, the locally assembled Maybach GLS is now priced starting at approximately Rs 2.75 crore (ex-showroom) a reduction of over ₹40 lakh compared to earlier CBU models. This substantial price drop is expected to stimulate demand further, making the strongest-selling Maybach SUV in India even more attractive to well-heeled customers.

Mercedes-Benz India’s CEO highlighted that the decision to produce the Maybach GLS locally underscores the company’s confidence in India’s position as one of the top five global markets for Maybach models. The sustained enthusiasm for ultra-luxury products like the GLS has encouraged the brand to strengthen its commitment to top-end vehicles rather than compete on volume alone.

Celebration Edition: Redefining Ultra-Luxury Comfort

To commemorate this manufacturing milestone, Mercedes-Benz has also launched the Mercedes-Maybach GLS Celebration Edition in India at around Rs 4.10 crore (ex-showroom) an even more exclusive variant that pushes the boundaries of premium comfort and personalization.

This Celebration Edition retains the standard SUV’s formidable 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, delivering around 557 bhp and 770 Nm of torque. Paired with a refined 9-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain enables a 0–100 km/h sprint in roughly 4.9 seconds, with a governed top speed of approximately 250 km/h impressive figures that match its grandeur.

However, the real allure of the Celebration Edition lies inside the cabin, where bespoke luxury takes centre stage. Rather than a conventional rear bench seat, this version features two individual executive seats separated by a full-length centre console. These seats recline and offer exceptional comfort, underscoring the SUV’s role as a chauffeur-friendly vehicle as much as a statement of personal luxury.

Interior Features That Set New Standards

The Celebration Edition’s rear seat environment is a showcase of indulgence. An MBUX rear tablet puts control of infotainment and climate functions at passengers’ fingertips, while fold-out tables and bespoke leather finishes add both practicality and elegance. A 9.6-litre refrigerated console with dedicated holders for Maybach-engraved champagne flutes further elevates the experience, perfect for serene intercity journeys or relaxed evenings on the move.

Mercedes-Benz’s extensive use of its MANUFAKTUR leather and Exclusive leather packages extends luxurious materials throughout the cabin from seats and roof liner to door panels and window frames. These handcrafted touches, along with features like massaging seats and advanced climate control, emphasise the brand’s dedication to a tailored yet immersive in-car experience.

Completing the sensory experience is the Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system, featuring up to 29 speakers with Dolby Atmos support. This premium audio setup converts the cabin into a concert hall on wheels and reinforces the SUV’s dual identity as both a high-performance machine and a sanctuary of comfort.

Strategic Impact and Market Outlook

The combination of local production and an exclusive variant like the Celebration Edition illustrates Mercedes-Benz’s broader strategy: to invest in luxury and innovation rather than volume sales in India. Mercedes-Benz India has also announced plans to introduce multiple new products and special editions throughout 2026, signalling an aggressive push across various vehicle segments.

Industry watchers note that this strategy aligns with global trends, where luxury and performance buyers are increasingly seeking vehicles that offer not just transportation but an expression of lifestyle and achievement. With the Maybach GLS, Mercedes-Benz has positioned itself at the forefront of this movement, leveraging local manufacturing to combine exclusivity with improved accessibility.

As the Maybach GLS solidifies its presence in India now backed by local assembly, enhanced price competitiveness, and premium editions it is poised to continue reigning as the ultimate choice for buyers seeking unmatched luxury in the SUV segment. Through this bold approach, Mercedes-Benz not only strengthens its foothold in India’s luxury market but also showcases the country’s rising importance in the global automotive landscape.
